Minichat

Minichat's front page makes a numbered case for itself — five things that make the video chat worth using — and the five are free, fun, safe, discreet and social. It is not only a random video chat: the page also offers profiles, photos, a friends list and search, which makes it part social network and part stranger roulette. Its own description of itself is "a new social network with integrated text and video chat to meet people and make friends with strangers".

You start a video chat and are connected to a stranger, with the option of moving to text messages and the ability to skip whenever you want. The app side adds what the browser does not: a profile to attract followers, a people search "by gender, age, location, and name", a continuous stream of new faces, and direct messages to anyone you like. The page is explicit that you appear as a stranger to others in the video chat, which is the design rather than an oversight.

The video chat is free and the page says so with unusual specificity: there is no time limit, so you can talk for thirty seconds or three hours, switch whenever you want and come back as often as you like. No subscription and no paid tier are described anywhere, which makes this the plainest free claim of the four platforms reviewed here.

Safety is one of the five numbered promises, and it is made in two parts: "Minichat is a community of friendly and kind people", and, thanks to a proactive moderation and reporting system, you can feel safe. The one concrete mechanism stated is a consequence — any inappropriate behaviour, harassment or intimidation will lead to banishment — which names an outcome rather than a process. It does not say how reports are handled, who reviews them or how quickly, and it states no age requirement. Worth noting on the other side of the ledger: the service keeps profiles and photos and lets you search people by name and location, which is a different privacy posture from the anonymous roulette sites it otherwise resembles.

People who want the lighter side of random video chat — the page suggests telling jokes, singing and reading poems — and who like the idea of keeping the people they meet as friends. Anyone who wants to stay unidentifiable should read the profile and search features first, because this is not an anonymous service in the way the roulette sites are.

A stranger video chat with a social network attached, and the free claim is the cleanest of the four reviewed here: no time limit, no subscription described, come and go as you like. The safety section is a promise with one outcome attached and no process behind it, which is the standard weakness of this category and is not excused by being friendly about it. The profile and name-search features are the part to notice, because they make the service better at keeping friends and less anonymous than "discreet" suggests.
