Chatrandom

Chatrandom is one of the longest-running services in this category and one of the few that does not behave like pure roulette. It connects you to strangers over webcam, free and without a sign-up, but it organises matching into rooms and modes rather than a single undifferentiated pool.

You choose a mode and a filter, confirm you are 18 or older, and press start. Chatrandom offers separate spaces, including a dedicated gay chat mode, which is unusual here: most sites in this category either ignore that audience or handle it badly. Filters cover gender and region, and the site markets itself on speed of connection rather than features.

No sign-up is required and the random chat is free. Premium features exist and the site does advertise them, but the basic pairing does not sit behind them, which puts it ahead of the sites where filtering is the product.

The 18+ confirmation is explicit on entry. Chatrandom does not publish the level of moderation detail that Bazoocam or Chatroulette do, and the separate mode structure means the atmosphere varies considerably between rooms. Report and block controls exist; use them, and treat a request to move to another app as a reason to end the conversation.

People who want something other than a single global pool, and particularly anyone looking for a dedicated space rather than a general one. The room structure is the differentiator and the reason to pick it over a simpler site.

Long-running, free where it counts, and more organised than most. It is not the biggest and the moderation is not the most transparent, but the mode structure gives it a shape that the plain roulette sites lack.
